Deck Ratings – Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Program

Able Seafarers Deck (ASD) – STCW 2010 Manila Amendment (Regulation II/5)

In accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) regulation II/5, this certification course best prepares you to serve on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more as deck ratings. It also provides you the required knowledge and skills as required by navigational watchkeeping, operation or maintenance and safety under the direct supervision of the master or officer in charge of a navigational watch.

Deck Ratings – Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Program

SKM Level 3 Navigational Watchkeeping and Deck Operation

SKM is a form of recognition given by the Department of Skills Development (JPK), Ministry of Human Resources to qualified individuals who have reached the level/ standard as determined by JPK. SKM is recognized by the industry as well as the government sectors in Malaysia, providing an exciting career and personal development path and aims to produce skilled and qualified workers to enhance the competitiveness of local industries in the world market.

At the end of the program, you will be awarded with the Able Seafarers Deck (ASD) certificate recognized by the Malaysia Marine Department together with the SKM Level 3 from JPK.

If you are looking for a dual certification program that amplifies your career choice whether to sail as deck ratings, or work as a government servant in related field, or even better, a program that allows you to pursue a higher level of education, this is your chance.

Entry Requirement

Deck Ratings – Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Program

  • Able to Read, Write and Calculate (3M) OR
  • Pass SRP/PMR/PT3 or equivalent qualifications
  • Male and Malaysian citizen
  • Healthy body (BMI 18.5 – 24.9)
  • Single and aged between 18 and 25 years
  • Minimum height 158cm and minimum weight 48kg (Body Mass Index (BMI): 18.5 – 24.9)
  • Mentally and physically healthy as certified by a medical practitioner approved by the Malaysian Marine Department
  • Not color blind (Please include an eye test report from a valid certified health panel)
  • Good vision without any visual aids (Contact Lenses or Glasses) and not colour blind

Deck Ratings – Level 3 Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) Program with Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Program (Dual Certificate Program)

  • Pass the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) OR,
  • Malaysian High School Certificate (STPM) OR,
  • Pass the Malaysian Higher Religious Certificate (STAM) OR,
  • Pass the Malaysian Vocational Certificate (SVM) OR,
  • Pass the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 2 in any field,
  • Male, Aged 18 – 25 years old
  • Minimum height 158cm and minimum weight 48kg (BMI 18.5 – 24.9)
  • Mentally and physically healthy as certified by a medical practitioner approved by the Malaysian Marine Department
  • Not color blind (Please include an eye test report from a valid certified health panel)
  • Good vision without any visual aids (Contact Lenses or Glasses)

Internship

The most anticipated challenge by all future sea-going professional is the sea-phase training prior obtaining their Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Proficiency issued by Malaysia Marine Department. No other internship can offer such exciting on-the-job training, only in ALAM with the support from various ship-owners and maritime industry key players.

Job Placement unit is established to aid in sourcing ship placement for cadets and ratings undergoing the on-job training (OJT) onboard vessel.

Internship will be during the last 2 months of their 13-month SKM Ratings Programme.  This programme provides for dual certificate – one for the STCW recognized by the Malaysia Marine Department and the other SKM Level 3 Certificate recognized and issued by Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK). This industrial training for a minimum of 10 weeks is aligned with Malaysia Marine Department’s requirement for endorsement of Certificate of Proficiency (CoP).
